Male Head Bust:

Classical Style

2024

Software Used: ZBrush, Substance Painter

Back

This digital bust reinterprets the timeless language of classical sculpture through modern tools, blending traditional form with experimental presentation. Sculpted in ZBrush and textured in Substance Painter, the work emphasizes strong anatomical landmarks, balanced proportions, and the heroic presence associated with Greco-Roman portraiture.

The fractured presentation, portions of the bust revealed as crystalline structures adds a contemporary dimension, suggesting both fragility and endurance. It recalls how ancient statues have survived across centuries, often incomplete yet more powerful because of their fragmentation.

This study is further explored as a comprehensive tutorial in Chapter 5 of my book, guiding readers through the process of sculpting a male head bust in the classical tradition. The chapter covers anatomy, proportion systems, surface refinement, and approaches to presentation, providing artists with the foundations to move fluidly between historical influence and personal innovation.

By situating the work on a pedestal with controlled lighting, the piece pays homage to museum display traditions, while its digital creation points toward the evolving future of sculptural practice.
