Anatomy Study:

The Foot

2023

Back

This digital sculpture highlights the anatomical complexity and expressive weight of the human foot, a subject too often overshadowed by studies of the hand or face. Sculpted in ZBrush and textured in Substance Painter, the work emphasizes the interplay of tendons, bone, and musculature through the dynamic pose of a raised heel pressing onto a plinth. The choice of patina and surface treatment recalls the permanence of bronze, bridging traditional atelier studies with contemporary digital craft.

The elevated stance draws attention to balance and support, revealing not only anatomical fidelity but also the symbolic grounding of the human body. By presenting the foot as both structure and expression, the piece functions as a study in weight, motion, and sculptural presence.

This study is also featured as a step-by-step tutorial in Chapter 4 of my book, where readers are guided through the process of sculpting the foot in ZBrush, from block-in and proportion to surface refinement and presentation. The inclusion of this tutorial extends the work beyond a finished piece, making it an educational tool for artists aiming to master one of the most challenging anatomical forms.
