Still Life Study:
Fruit Bowl
2023
Software Used: ZBrush, Maya, Redshift3D
This digital still life pays homage to the traditions of classical painting while reimagining them through a sculptural and cinematic lens. Built in ZBrush and assembled in Maya, the scene is rendered with Redshift3D, showcasing the luminous interplay of form, light, and surface detail. Each element: the fruit, candle, drapery, and vessel, was modeled and positioned to echo the compositional rigor of Old Master still lifes, while the glowing atmosphere adds a modern, almost ethereal quality.
The study functions as both an artistic exercise and a technical demonstration, exploring how digital sculpting can capture weight, translucency, and texture in ways that parallel traditional oil painting. The candlelight and floating particles enhance the drama, creating a balance between grounded realism and symbolic flourish.
This project is also featured as a tutorial in Chapter 2 of my book, guiding readers step by step through building a still life in ZBrush. The tutorial covers blocking primary forms, refining surfaces, experimenting with materials, and preparing a composition for rendering. It serves as an accessible entry point for artists to practice observation, composition, and digital craft.
