Week 11 | Human Head Bust |  Time vs Value

CLASS AGENDA

We will dive into the intricate world of "Sculpting the Head." In Week 6, 7, & 8 we explored the art of sculpting dynamic foot poses, refining our skills and knowledge. This week, we will embark on a new challenge that requires attention to detail, anatomy, and creativity as we sculpt the human head.

Sculpting the Head - Understanding the Basics

Now, let's shift our focus to sculpting the human head. This is an essential skill for any digital artist or sculptor, as the head is often the focal point of any character or portrait. Here's what we'll cover in this part:

  • Anatomy Fundamentals: Understanding the basic anatomy of the head, including the proportions of facial features, cranial landmarks, and the underlying skull structure.

  • Blocking Out: We'll start by blocking out the head's basic shape and proportions using techniques you've already learned.

  • Sculpting Techniques: Explore various sculpting techniques, brushes, and tools specific to head sculpting. Learn how to refine the features, create expressions, and add intricate details.

  • Expressions and Emotions: Study how to convey different expressions and emotions through your head sculpt. This adds depth and personality to your characters.

Assignment 5: Sculpting the Head

Your primary goal for this week is to gather reference and to begin building the mass of your head study. You have the creative freedom to choose your subject – whether male or female. Focus on capturing the essence of the subject, paying close attention to proportions, features, and expressions.

As always, keep the concept of the golden mean for proportional measurements in mind. This principle remains essential in achieving balance and harmony in your sculptures.

Project Review and Critique

Just as we did with the dynamic foot sculptures, please place your head sculptures into the provided slide templates and save them in the Project 5 deliverables folder. We'll review and discuss them at the beginning of our next class. This is an excellent opportunity to receive constructive feedback and learn from your peers' work.

Requirements

  • 30 hours is the caveat see how far you can get designating 10 hours a week for three weeks to this project. Your goal isn’t to finish this project, but to see how far you can get in that time. Grading will be determined heavily on the time that you put into your work.

  • Start with a file that I give you as a launching point.
