Week 3 | Sculpting Techniques |  Brushes

This week we’ll be focusing on the brush system and tactics for how to use some of these brushes. The Class agenda seen below is an overview of what I’ll be covering in the demo for getting started. Included with this page is an overview of the entire brush system. This touches on everything you need to know regarding what is significant to ZBrush artists when working with and building your own brushes.

SCULPTING DEMO Texture Card Creating Alphas and VDMs

Intro

Creating and sculpting VDMs can be one of the greatest assets a ZBrush artist can have. Its good practice to create good habits moving forward. I’ll also be walking you through opportunities where you’ll be able to contribute to your own growing library of 3D assets and brushes as you work.

SETUP

  1. Resize your Document to 1024x1024:

    • Document > PRO (Deactivate) > W=1024 > H=1024 > Resize

  2. Drag Plane tool onto Canvas

  3. Press T

  4. Tool > MakePolyMesh3D

  5. Press F to frame into your plane tool

  6. Turn off Geometry > SMT

  7. Subdivide to level 7

  8. Sculpt your desired form

EXPORTING for Tileable texture

  1. Export jpg for Photoshop

    • Document > Export Image > Select Folder Location > OK

  2. Import into provided Photoshop Template.

MORPH BRUSH

TIP: the Morph Brush is great for erasing history or the progress of your sculpting

GETTING STARTED

  1. Make Plane

  2. Turn off smoothing. Geometry>SMT (deactivate)

  3. Subdivide to level 7

  4. Create morph target

  5. Sculpt out the changes. Use Alphas where possible. Use masking to help isolate areas where needed.

  6. To remove the changes, select the Morph brush and brush out to return the mesh to the morph state if needed.
